RF Operating Tips

A few basic requests/ground rules..

Listen first?

Remember the link is simplex and may be in use by another local station with a lot weaker signal than the link itself. On a conventional repeater system you would hear them via the repeater output? But on a simplex link it's all to easy to transmit over the top of another local station in error? The K tone only works when a local station is using the link, so if you hear it you know the link is in use locally?

Please leave a short break of around 4 seconds between over's

This is a real must... to allow link stations to reset and for any waiting stations time to break in etc. Keying up too soon means that remote links do not get a chance to reset and will often just stay in a state of permanent transmit as a result? (see the FAQ here)

"Pass it over" to another station

When there is a few people involved in the QSO, "passing it over" by callsign or name is a must? This is because Internet linking is much more prone to stations "doubling" with each other than conventional radio? Throwing it up in the air usually causes mayhem.
